Small-minded orchestration

"BEA and IBM this week published an ill-conceived mongrel specification called BPELJ. Edwin Khodabakchian has done a great job of listing the technical shortcomings in a posting to his blog. I'm simply appalled at the defective thinking that is being used to promote this mongrel spec.
Its authors attempt to justify their poisonous cocktail of BPEL and Java by introducing their whitepaper with some sanctimonious twaddle about BPEL being geared towards "programming in the large," while the role of languages like Java is to perform "programming in the small.""
Gee, somebody got angry here. He's probably right, too, since the proposed approach is at least a bit rusty in the connection to third party systems... and tight couplings are things that should stay in the past.

Open Source and Portals

"I think the reason there is no clear winner in the portal market is that portal is a technology that needs to adapt to the business user," says Gluecode CEO Winston Damarillo. "Consequently it's customized and no single vendor, even the size of IBM, can identify the entire universe of needs. The product needs to be small, flexible and adaptive, not big or gigantic."

Hedging your bets on SOA

WebMethods has assembled an infrastructure offering that is designed to offer its customers a roadmap into SOA:
  • Its integration platform service-enables existing resources
  • Its newly-acquired Fabric tool adds service assembly and management
  • An SOA roadmap leads on to process orchestration and activity monitoring
  • The aim is to future-proof the company's offering
  • But it faces stiff competition in the SOA market

Business value of architecture

"Architecture is what determines the size of a project, thus where the duration and cost of development can be controlled. System architecture controls the cost of hardware and most of the capital expenses associated with IT, but software architecture controls where the bulk of the labor and time are spent. Software architecture, combined with project management, is where the leadership has the best chance to turn a large project into a small project."

Stateful web services

The OASIS Web Services Resource Framework (WSRF) Technical Committee will define a set of royalty-free, interoperable, and modular specifications that will allow the relationship between a Web service and its state to be modeled in an explicit, standard fashion."

The End of Passwords

The reason why password-based security needs to change is simple: People cannot be trusted. More specifically, computer users at companies are often given so many passwords for different systems and network accounts that they end up writing them all down. Such a document left in the open creates a security hazard.

Technologies like smart cards that offer a different path to user authentication have been slow to catch on in widespread fashion. With the refinement of these alternatives, that could change.

Are passwords finally on the way out?

Modelling the real world

"The concept of modeling the real world has been so badly abused in the OO community, that I want to find the person who first coined the notion and flay him alive (not really)."

Web services downgrade for SAP

"Analysts at London-based broker Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein have downgraded SAP stock because of web services. They reiterated a "sell" rating on SAP AG (SAPG.F) today, citing a price target 10 percent below the current market price.

According to Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein's research note published this morning, one of the core markets for SAP in the long term is web services-based composite applications, reports online information site New Ratings. The analysts mention that new applications are likely to provide limited revenue growth opportunities for SAP in the long term, given that these applications need to be highly commoditized and standardized."
